Exclusive: Jeremy Renner Denies Hitting On Jessica Simpson

The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner is squashing a report that he recently made the moves on singer Jessica Simpson.

People.com reported that at a recent cocktail party for his movie at the L.A. home of Madonna's manager Guy Oseary, Renner, 39, "spent the night hitting on Jessica like crazy. They were really flirting up a storm."

But Renner - who brought his mom to the Oscars Sunday - told UsMagazine.com Sunday at the Governor's Ball that he only met Simpson, 29, for "three minutes."

"Her hair stylist [Ken Paves] did my mom's hair so we were talking about that -- and then all of a sudden we're dating!" he told Us.

Asked if he's seeing anyone, he told Us, "I’m single -- and looking!"

But that doesn't mean he's a Hollywood player.

"I'm not a ladies man!" Renner told Us. "I'm a working man! That's all."

Step aside, Jessica Simpson! First-time nominee Jeremy Renner is bringing his mom, Valerie Clearley, as his Oscar date Sunday.

"He keeps me calm," Clearley told PEOPLE at Thursday's Hollywood Reporter pre-Oscar bash in L.A. "I'm the nervous one. He's been to [award shows] before. I haven't. It's crazy!"

Renner, 39, a best actor nominee for The Hurt Locker, gave his mother an early taste of what to expect at the Academy Awards during Thursday's reception, held at mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's official residence. The two navigated the red carpet before TV crews descended on Renner, who has emerged as one of Hollywood's new leading men after his star turn in the Iraq war drama.

Even as she's adjusting to all the excitement, Clearley – who's still working on picking out a dress for Sunday – is "so proud" of Renner and his recent success. "It’s just been the most amazing thing," she said.

The 82nd Academy Awards will air live on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood starting at 8 p.m. ET.
