Demi Lovato: Details Of The Fight That Sent Her To Treatment

Demi Lovato: Details Of The Fight That Sent Her To Treatment

By Sharon Cotliar

Wednesday November 03, 2010

What really caused Demi Lovato to enter treatment?

The catalyst was a fight between the 18-year-old Disney Channel star and a dancer on the Jonas Brothers world tour, but the problem started the night before, a source close to the singer's family tells PEOPLE.

"As she did on most nights off, Demi invited her band, dancers and her parents to dinner," says the source. "Afterward, she broke off with a very small group."

The following day, tour managers and Lovato's stepfather, Eddie De La Garza, questioned the group's conduct. According to a source close to the situation, the group had been partying.

"When tour management found out about this, they talked to the people involved, including Demi," says the source. "Demi reacted badly and perceived that someone on tour had told on her."

When Lovato and other tour members were on an airplane that same day, Lovato confronted a young dancer, whom she thought might have been the one to blame for telling on her. "There was a short, physical altercation," says the source, adding that it was "one-sided."

"Afterwards, Demi felt awful about her behavior and realized she needed to take personal responsibility for it," says the family source. "Because of this, and because of the battles Demi has fought throughout her life, both she and her family realized she needed to take steps to get help immediately."

The singer-actress "decided to seek medical care for her physical and emotional issues at a treatment center," says the source, adding, "she is not in drug rehab."

Contrary to published reports, Twilight star Ashley Greene, who is dating Lovato's ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, "played no role in this," says a source close to the situation. Nor did the Jonas Brothers. "They were not involved in the incident," says another source.

Adds a rep for Greene, "There was never an issue between Ashley and Demi, and there is no truth to any rumors about a conflict."

According to reps for Ashley Greene and Demi Lovato, there was no "Greene effect" on the Disney star's recent breakdown.

"There is no truth to this rumor or any other rumors of conflict between the girls," Ash's publicist tells E! News. Lovato's rep echoes similar sentiments.

Funny, ‘cause we have multiple sources who witnessed the heated exchange of words, starting from Demi's end.

Follow Ted and Ashley on Twitter

But reps never fib—or cover stuff up—so we're sure D and A are totally BFFs.

Fact is, Ash being in South America with Joe Jonas was probably just the breaking point for Demi. That, and a scuffle with a back-up dancer who was also in the airport in Peru—but that was over stuff entirely unrelated to the Twilight star.

And yes, sorry, but that "scuffle" happened, too. Hell, if the almighty People is even reporting it, that says something!

Lovato checked herself into a treatment center for many, many issues, not just boy woes. Again, props to the Disney darling; that takes guts at her age.

Thing is, publicists aren't the only ones scrambling to save face right now. Disney is also on high alert, enforcing those nondisclosure agreements it has its worker kids sign (more on that tomorrow). You know, like all of Demi's Sonny With a Chance costars?

Basically the mega-empire that is Disney wants to shut down any possibility of people talking about all this, unless the cast is sending Demi "best wishes" sentiments.

Even Lovato's dad—who has been estranged from his daughter for a couple of years—isn't allowed to go on camera without Disney's OK.

So what's the big secret?

Unfortunately, we're hearing there are a few demons from the Disney set that suits want to make sure stay out of print.

We'll oblige, then. Just wish Demi the best right now.

As Demi Lovato focuses on getting better after checking into a treatment center to address "emotional and physical issues" that have plagued her much of her life, her parents are taking a moment to thank her fans for standing by their daughter.

"Our entire family appreciates the outpouring of support we have received from Demi's fans," Eddie and Dianna De La Garza tell PEOPLE. "We are touched by their kindness."

The 18-year-old Disney Channel star is currently receiving treatment an an undisclosed center.

"Demi is not receiving care at one of the Hollywood-type centers," said a source close to the family. "She is at a real facility that specializes in helping adolescent and adult women with the type of issues she has battled."

According to the source, the teen star "has fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting," a form of self-harm. "She has a long history of battling these issues."

In deciding to leave the Jonas Brothers's world tour, the family source said, "Demi is taking control by getting help."

Demi Lovato is seeking professional help.
The Disney star, 18, dropped out of the Jonas Brothers tour over the weekend and checked into a treatment center for "emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time," her rep confirms to PEOPLE.
"Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help," the rep says. "She is doing just that. Demi and her family ask that the media please respect their privacy during this difficult time. She regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future."
The rep didn't specify the nature of Lovato's problems.
But a source close to Lovato's family tells PEOPLE, "She was bullied in school. She fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting. … Demi is taking control by getting help."

Enough was enough for Demi Lovato, 18, who checked into a medical center on Monday to get professional help because – as a source close to Lovato's family tells PEOPLE – "She fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting. [She] is taking control by getting help."
The source confirms that a fight with a dancer on tour was the catalyst for Lovato's decision to seek treatment. According to another insider, Lovato "doesn't have that same kind of love for life that she at one point had."
The insider tells PEOPLE she was already struggling with her weight when she entered her teens: "She definitely had body-image issues. She was always conscious of her weight."
"Like many other teenage girls, she struggled a lot to fit in and find acceptance," says a family friend. "She's very sensitive, very intuitive and that is part of what makes her a wonderful performer – very talented. It is double-edged sword. I think she felt that the hard time she had [in school], problems with kids who were incredibly vicious made her stronger. But none of us feels strong every day."
Lovato acknowledged those body issues to PEOPLE in September. "I have a tattoo on my rib and it says, 'You make me beautiful,'" she said. "There was a song that inspired me when I was younger and it helped me through a really rough time I used to have self-image issues."
The singer-actress added, "Feeling comfortable in your clothes is something I deal with to this day. I wish I had somebody I had to look up to when I was younger to stand up and say, 'Hey, I have fat days.' So I want to be able to start a foundation or something that's for girls feeling confident, to empower them."
Bullied as a child, she wanted to work with kids to let them know, "I've been through it and I came out a stronger person."

Why Demi Lovato Decided To Get Help

Why Demi Lovato Decided To Get Help

Tuesday – November 02, 2010

Demi Lovato shocked fans Monday night by announcing that she has dropped out of the Jonas Brothers tour and checked into a treatment center for "emotional and physical issues."

The nature of Lovato's problems weren't disclosed, but numerous websites - including TMZ - state that the singer, 18, recently was in a physical altercation with a female member of her tour and that served a "catalyst" in her decision to seek help.

Lovato's road to fame hasn't been easy.

In the seventh grade, she was bullied to such a degree that she had to be home-schooled, she told Ellen DeGeneres in 2008. "Sometimes [bullying] doesn't just end in high school," she wrote on her Celebrity MySpace page that year. "Sometimes I get online and read blogs (which I probably shouldn't if I can't handle it) and read the horrible things that people say in comments ... and it can really take a toll on you."

The same year, Lovato showed red marks on her wrists at Miley Cyrus' 16th birthday bash, fueling rumors that she cuts herself. (At the time, her rep said that tight "gummy bracelets" had left "indentations" on her wrist.)

Citing a person familiar with the situation, the Associated Press reports that the Disney star -- who split from tour partner Joe Jonas earlier this year -- indeed had self-mutilation issues.

She also showed signs of having an eating disorder, reports the AP.

"She needed help before a smaller problem got worse," an insider tells Us. "She is doing OK."

Adds the source, "She has been forced into showbiz from a young age and that puts tremendous pressure on someone ... everyone is really happy she is getting help."
